A coupling device transmits force between the two rotating shafts in industrial power transmissions and is critical for operation. So it’s important that the coupling chosen for your gearbox is able to handle the resulting forces, vibration and load type of the rotating shafts.
The natural vibrations, along with the amount of torque transmitted, can put excessive loads on equipment and couplings, leading to a shortened service life. So the nature of this force and the amount of force transmitted between shafts, along with other considerations, impact the service factor of the chosen coupling. Using the correct style of coupling with the correct service factor is key to getting the maximum life out of equipment.
There are different types of couplings tailored to specific applications and service factors, including the flexible coupling, flexible shaft coupling or rigid coupling. For many applications, using flexible elastomer couplings can lengthen the life of power transmission equipment by minimizing the potential for misalignment.
How elastomer couplings work. An elastomer coupling is designed for simplicity, flexibility and the ability to absorb a degree of shock, transfer the torque load and operate with a limited amount of misalignment. Unlike a rigid coupling, these unique Falk couplings are made from maintenance-free polyurethane that permits a small amount of flex but also transfers the load as needed.
The elastomer Falk coupling uses a set of hubs locked together by a teethed polyurethane insert held tightly in place by a locking collar. This style of flexible coupling can also be retrofitted to some equipment, helping with reduced vibrations and prolonged service life for your industrial power transmission.
Benefits of elastomer couplings. Elastomer couplings provide many benefits by means of reduced maintenance costs, ease of use and reduced stress on equipment, leading to longer service life. They are designed to be installed or replaced in place, without removing hubs or realigning motors or drives, to minimize down time. Elastomer Falk couplings also reduce stress on internal components by absorbing the stresses caused by shaft alignment issues.
