The team at Mar-Dustrial recently revived a 12.5 GRF FALK Gearbox that had been stored outside since its last repair nine years ago. The methods used to prep the unit for storage were only good for one year indoors and six months outdoors, so after nine years outside you can imagine the condition this unit was in.
To get this monster of a gearbox back in working order, the unit had to be completely torn down and inspected. It was found to contain a large amount of rust throughout the gear reducer due to the improper storage conditions. Long term exposure to the outside elements allowed condensation to accumulate inside.
It was completely cleaned inside and out. The housing had to be chemically dipped to remove the rust while all of the gearings and shafting was cleaned by hand. The FALK gearbox was then fitted with new bearings, seals, shims and gaskets and reassembled to factory specifications.
The unit gearing was sprayed and prepared for long term storage with a gallon or so of Noxrust added to the inside. Finally, the unit was painted and the shafts were coated with a rust inhibitor coating.
