Profitable factory operations depend on small details. If a single part is off, the entire line is impacted. Couplings may seem small and unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but the truth is that the wrong coupling can cause downtime. A poor fit, improper load protection, stiffness, and other signs of poor coupling selection can lead to malfunctions and lost income—not to mention wasted labor. Today we’re taking a look at the different types of FALK couplings we offer here at Mar-Dustrial. Read on to learn about various coupling options and several uses for each.
Overall, gear couplings connect the end of two rotating shafts. In this way, couplings transmit power. Because no system is perfect, couplings must be designed to allow for some end movement and/or misalignment. If couplings are correctly selected, installed, and maintained, they can save money via reduced downtime.
Let’s take a look at a few specialized types of couplings, and their potential applications.
FALK Grid Couplings
In these couplings, a flexible steel grid distributes shock and increases strength. Oftentimes, the design of grid couplings includes two flanged hubs with grooves. These two hubs are held together by the “grid,” a circuitous mechanical part that acts like a spring, absorbing force. Increased load only increases the contact between the grooves and the grid, resulting in exceptional performance. As we deal in surplus parts, we sell both T and F couplings from FALK. The F couplings are now out of production, yet still in use in many facilities. We can replace your obsolete grid couplings.
Uses for Falk Grid Couplings:
- Operations with limited space
- For reversing line direction
- With high-torque loads
FALK Gear Couplings
As mentioned earlier, gear couplings join non-collinear shafts. They also pass on torque. Two flexible joints connect the two shafts, while a third connecting shaft called a spindle connects the joints. Everything from environmental conditions to operating speed can influence coupling selection.
Uses for Falk Gear Couplings:
- Connecting shafts
- Transmitting power
- Maintaining overall productivity
FALK Couplings-Elastomer
Elastomer couplings are distinguished by a central elastomer spider that fits perfectly between two crenellated hubs. The spider provides insulation against electricity, reducing heat. This type of coupling is also flexible enough to allow for a few degrees of misalignment.
Uses for Falk Couplings-Elastomer:
- Compensating for slight shaft misalignments
- For preventing backlash
- In high temperature operations
FALK Fluid Couplings
Inside a fluid coupling sit two turbines and hydraulic fluid. An engine or motor rotates the driving turbine (“the pump”). The hydraulic fluid smoothly passes on the force of the driving turbine to the output turbine.
Uses for Fluid Couplings:
- In systems with variable speeds
- For preventing shock loading
- To create fluid starts (This type of gear coupling was designed by an engineer who was sick of the sudden starts and stops on London buses.)
Whatever coupling you’re looking for, Mar-Dustrial has you covered. Our expansive inventory includes thousands of surplus FALK parts. Whether you need a coupling that will always stay connected, or you prefer a system that disconnects at high torque loads, Mar-Dustrial has the FALK coupling you require.
